Developing a training model for emergency medicine training

Enhancing Intubation Training for
Healthcare Professionals

For Prometheus Medical, I designed and developed a 3D-printed larynx model to enhance training in patient intubation. This realistic and cost-effective tool allowed healthcare professionals to practice life-saving procedures in a controlled environment, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application.

The opportunity

Develop a cost-effective model
for Medical Training

Prometheus Medical required an innovative training aid to improve the teaching of intubation techniques—a critical skill for emergency healthcare providers. Existing solutions were either expensive or lacked the anatomical accuracy necessary for effective training.

Industry: Medical Training and Technology

Challenge: Develop an affordable, anatomically accurate model of the larynx to improve training for intubation procedures.

Key Objectives: Create a durable, realistic training tool that replicates the complexities of the human airway, ensuring healthcare professionals gain practical experience in a safe environment.

Marianne gir enestående råd i utviklingsfaser, fungerer svært godt i tverrfaglige team, og leverer produkter som har skapt stor kommersiell verdi for vår bedrift.

Approach

How the Problem was solved

A hands-on, user-focused approach guided the design and development process:

Research and Analysis: Conducted extensive research on laryngeal anatomy and consulted with medical professionals to ensure the model’s accuracy and relevance.

Design and Prototyping: Utilized advanced 3D modeling software to design the larynx, incorporating intricate anatomical details. Created and refined prototypes using 3D printing technology.

Material Selection: Selected materials that mimicked the texture and flexibility of human tissue, providing a realistic tactile experience during training.

Collaboration: Worked closely with medical trainers to test and refine the model, ensuring it met their practical needs for intubation training.

Production: Delivered a final, scalable solution that could be easily reproduced for widespread use in training programs.

The Impact

Saving lives, by enhancing intubation training for health care professionals

The 3D-printed larynx model delivered significant benefits for Prometheus Medical’s training programs:

Enhanced Realism: Provided a highly accurate and tactile training experience, replicating real-world intubation scenarios.

Cost Efficiency: Offered a cost-effective alternative to traditional training models, enabling broader access to high-quality training tools.

Improved Skills Retention: Helped trainees gain confidence and proficiency, with feedback from users indicating better preparedness for live procedures.

Reflection

Key Learnings and Insights

This project emphasized the importance of merging technology with practical healthcare needs. By combining anatomical precision with 3D printing’s flexibility, the larynx model demonstrated how innovation can make advanced training tools accessible and effective. The experience reinforced the value of collaboration with end-users and iterative design to achieve impactful results.
